NBI tags persons of interest behind death threats vs Marcos
MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation has identified persons of interest in the alleged online death threats against President Marcos, NBI Director Melvin Matibag reported yesterday.
The development came as the bureau investigated a wave of online death threats against Sen. Risa Hontiveros following the July 17 killing of vlogger Alicia Lipata, popularly known as Mima Alicia, at her residence in Caloocan.
“We have penetrated it,” Matibag said in a chance interview.
When asked if the NBI had identified the people behind the threats, he replied, “yes,” but declined to provide details, saying the investigation is ongoing.
Matibag said the NBI Cybercrime Division is continuing its case buildup before filing charges with the Department of Justice.
He said the bureau had uncovered numerous online threats targeting Marcos while investigating the alleged threats against Hontiveros.
According to the agency’s investigation, the individuals allegedly behind the threats against the senator were communicating through a group chat, which investigators have already uncovered as part of the probe.
The NBI has been investigating alleged death threats against Marcos since Vice President Sara Duterte’s online press briefing in November 2024.
During Duterte’s impeachment trial on July 22, Matibag testified that investigators had narrowed their probe to fewer than 20 persons of interest as they worked to identify the alleged assassin the Vice President purportedly contacted to kill Marcos.
