The Puducherry police have arrested four persons on charges of assaulting a reporter of a Tamil daily while he was covering the removal of banners put up by supporters of Independent legislator Azhagu alias Azhaganantham representing Kadirgamam Assembly constituency on Sunday.

According to the police, reporter Rajkumar, was assaulted by four men when officials from the Public Works Department were removing banners illegally put up by the supporters to announce the inauguration of an MLA office on Vazhudavur Road.

The supporters of the legislator had objected to the removal of the banners by the PWD. The reporter, while taking a video of the argument, was assaulted on his head and neck. He was treated as an outpatient at a government hospital for injuries, the police said.

A separate case has been registered against unidentified persons for erecting the banners based on a complaint filed by a PWD official, the police said.
