Namma Theru: Our Design, a three-day neighbourhood street initiative by Pelathope Urban Living Lab (PULL) in partnership with PLUS and BeFantastic will be held from August 7 at Pelathope in Mylapore.

According to a press release, Pelathope will transform into a living neighbourhood laboratory with interactive exhibitions, heritage experiences, creative workshops, public art, storytelling and traditional games.

This initiative builds on the conversations that began during the Pelathope Open House, evolving over the past year into collaborative research on Pelathope’s ecology, mobility, culture and everyday life. One can register for these free events that include Community Dot Exchange, a collaborative workshop that invites participants to create evolving kolams together by building upon one another’s designs; another on learning from kolam practitioners; a panel discussion on Reimagining Pelathope; and listen to stories of water and Pelathope.

‘Conserving House No. 40’, a guided heritage tour with conservation architect Apoorva Iyengar, will take participants on the architectural significance, history and ongoing conservation journey of a historic home from Pelathope. This is a ticketed event.

The thinna experience

Over three days, the thinnai would transform into a vibrant space for storytelling, making and collective reflection through interactive installations, participatory activities and community gatherings.

Theru Talkies is an interactive installation where everyday objects unlock oral histories and memories of Mylapore.

Memory Canopy is a walk beneath a canopy created from community-donated saris, celebrating the shared stories and collective spirit of the neighbourhood.

Oral Histories of Mylapore is a moderated discussion where guests share an evening of stories, memories and conversations exploring the people, places and everyday life that have shaped Mylapore across generations.

An inter-generational storytelling workshop by Aparna Raman is also lined up.

The organisers invite people to sign up to volunteers for the workshops, with visitor engagement, logistics and documentation.
