Police are urging a woman to hand herself in after she ran over a man who was trying to stop her from stealing his car in Heidelberg West.

As the 68-year-old man continues to fight for his life in hospital, police have released more CCTV of the woman in the moments before the crime on Saturday night, and the black Honda CRV which remains missing.

Detective Acting Inspector Paul Lineham said on Tuesday that the man had undergone surgery and remained in a critical condition.

“I’ve spoken to the family this morning, and they are absolutely traumatised by the events,” he said.

“I’ve got no doubt she knew she ran this victim over. The time for panic is over,” he said, addressing the culprit directly. “It’s time for you to hand yourself in right now, and if you’re truly remorseful, and have any shred of decency at all, hand yourself into police.”

“They’re incredibly angry this happened and that the father got left on the road with these life-threatening injuries.”

The additional CCTV footage released on Tuesday shows the car left running with a door open in the driveway and a woman in a dark beanie, white hooded puffer jacket, leggings and white sneakers, watching the car and looking around before approaching the driveway.

Lineham said police had information that the woman, Caucasian and in her 40s, had been walking around the area before the incident. He said she had been loitering, walking into properties and looking over fences as if searching for an opportunity to steal something. He said the victim and his family did not know the culprit.

“The community would be rightly outraged about this.”

The fresh footage follows chilling CCTV released the day after the incident.

In that vision, the woman can be seen staking out the street before crossing the road and entering the driveway of a property, just after the man pulled the Black 2018 Honda CRV into his driveway for a short stop. He left his car running while he went inside.

The confrontation happens off camera: A few seconds after the woman walks up the driveway, setting off a pilot light, more women’s voices begin to shriek: “Somebody help!” “Get out of the car!”

Then a man angrily joins in: “Get the f--- out of the car”, he roars several times.

Half a minute later, footage then shows the man on the back of the SUV as it hurtles backwards out of the driveway. He falls off and appears to be driven over.

The man’s wife then rushes from the driveway to his aid, while the car is backed into a driveway across the road and speeds off as the wife’s screams fill the night air.
