Taking a cue from the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s recent crackdown, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is set to launch a city-wide drive to clear abandoned, unclaimed and unused vehicles parked on roads, footpaths and other public places.

The corporation has given vehicle owners time till August 15 to voluntarily remove such vehicles, failing which they will be towed away from August 16 onwards.

In a public notification issued on Tuesday (August 4), the MCC said several vehicles have been lying unattended for prolonged periods on public roads, pavements, road margins and other public places. Such vehicles have become a hindrance to the smooth movement of pedestrians and traffic, besides posing safety risks, obstructing waste collection, serving as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-causing vectors, and affecting the city’s cleanliness and aesthetic appeal.

The corporation has urged vehicle owners to voluntarily remove such vehicles before the August 15 deadline. From August 16, MCC officials will conduct inspections, identify abandoned vehicles and affix notices on them. If owners fail to remove the vehicles within the stipulated period mentioned in the notices, the corporation will initiate their removal in coordination with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the Police Department.

The MCC said the action would be taken under Section 127 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which empowers authorities to remove vehicles abandoned in public places or those causing obstruction to traffic. The cost of towing and transportation, along with any prescribed penalties, will be recovered from the registered owners. If necessary, the vehicles may also be disposed of through auction or e-auction in accordance with the law and a resolution adopted by the MCC Council on July 30, 2024.
