The authorities at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, are taking steps to strengthen the security system at the facility against the backdrop of reported theft attempts, destruction of hospital properties, unauthorised assembly of people, public smoking and consumption of liquor and drugs, and other alleged anti-social activities that are found to have disturbed patients and their caregivers in recent times.

More staff are being deployed to ensure round-the-clock security. The hospital authorities said miscreants and those who are found to be roaming around the premises without any purpose would be removed. The police would be informed, if necessary, and complaints would be filed seeking action against them. Caregivers of patients are allowed only at designated places in the hospital. They should not assemble in wards, corridors, stairs, entrances, parking areas, and other public spaces. Action would also be taken against those who fail to follow the instructions of the security staff.

Public drinking, consumption of drugs, smoking, theft, destruction of properties, threatening hospital staff or visitors, obstructing the functioning of the hospital, and violent behaviour are illegal. Such offences would be dealt with under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act. To strengthen the security system at the hospital, patrols and surveillance had been intensified at major entrance points, wards, outpatient blocks, parking areas, and isolated places. Special surveillance had been enforced on electrical equipment, copper cables, and AC outdoor units, the authorities said.
