Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur no longer has officials signaling if field goal attempts are successful during his team’s practices.

The reason?

“I just love making you guys uncomfortable,” LaFleur said referring to the media.

No one should be more uncomfortable than the head coach himself, though.

From 1989-2022, the trio of Chris Jacke, Ryan Longwell and Mason Crosby gave the Packers some of the most reliable kicking in football. The last 3 ½ years, though, has mostly been a mess.

During the 2023 playoffs, FOX reporter Tom Rinaldi said on-air that LaFleur told him regarding rookie kicker Anders Carlson, “When he goes out there, I just pray.”

After Carlson officially flamed out, Brayden Narveson failed miserably. And after the Packers got a tremendous season from Brandon McManus in 2024, the veteran took a major step back in 2025.

So Green Bay selected Trey Smack in the sixth round of April’s draft, then waived both McManus and holdover Lucas Havrisik.

Today, Smack is the only kicker in camp.

And the way things have started, LaFleur might be saying the full rosary again in 2026.

Smack is just 8-of-13 on field goals through the first two days of training camp — an unsightly 61.5%. Smack was 5-of-8 on a gorgeous, 75-degree Monday after going 3-of-5 during a blustery practice Sunday.

“I just think it’s going to be a work in progress,” LaFleur said regarding Smack. “This is not our first time with a rookie kicker, so I know that there’s going to be some good, and then I know there’s going to be some that he’s going to want to have back. I think that’s all part of the learning process.”

LaFleur, who began coaching Green Bay in 2019, enjoyed four years of reliability from Crosby, who made 85.4% of his field goals in that time. The Packers let their franchise career scoring leader go after the 2022 campaign, though, and it’s led to a revolving door at the kicking position.

Carlson missed more extra points (six) and more total kicks (13) than anyone in football in 2023. He also missed at least one kick in his final five games and 10 of his last 12 contests.

Carlson had a chance to give Green Bay a 24-17 lead over San Francisco in the 2023 NFC divisional playoffs, but missed a 41-yard field goal with just more than 5 minutes left. The 49ers then drove and won the game, 24-21.

Narveson won the job in 2024, then began the year 12-of-17 and ranked 31st in the NFL in field goal percentage (70.6%) when Green Bay released him in mid-October.

The Packers turned to veteran Brandon McManus, who was sensational the rest of 2024. McManus made 20-of-21 field goals that season, drilled all 30 of his extra points and had game-winning field goals against Houston and Jacksonville that year.

McManus missed three games with injuries last year. In his stead, Lucas Havrisik made all four of his field goals — including a franchise record 61-yarder — but was just 7-of-9 on extra points.

McManus returned and finished the year 24-of-30 on field goals (80.0%) and 32-of-33 on extra points (97.0%). But McManus left seven points off the board — missing two field goals and an extra point — in a 31-27 Wild Card loss to Chicago.

“Biggest disappointment in my career,” McManus said that night. “Just an embarrassment of a performance.”

The Packers traded a pair of seventh round picks for a sixth and drafted Smack in April, released McManus 13 days later, and also released Havrisik on July 28. That’s left Smack with no in-house competition on a daily basis.

“I think he’s got plenty of pressure on him just on a day to day,” LaFleur said. “I mean that’s why we’re talking about this for so long, right? Because there’s a lot of interest and there’s going to be pressure no matter what position you play in this league. That’s just the nature of our league, but I’m confident that he will work his way through it.”

Smack has deleted all social media except Instagram to try removing the outside noise. And LaFleur might be trying to protect Smack by removing officials when field goals are being attempted.

Pretty soon the real games will arrive, though.

So will the officials.

Then, we’ll see if LaFleur is praying once again.
