Choosing between Mega Mewtwo X and Y in Pokemon GO

CEBU, Philippines — So you’ve got yourself a shiny Mewtwo with great stats from the recently concluded Pokemon GO Fest 2026. Or maybe you have a spare hundo from the first time it was released back in 2017 and have amassed enough energy to Mega Evolve it.

But wait, there are actually two Mega Mewtwos. Should you choose Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y?

In this guide, we’ll compare and contrast the two Mega Evolution forms of one of the most beloved legendaries of all time. We’ll also be touching upon their raid performances to know which form tips the scales of battle.

Now, hold on to your candies and stardust before asking yourself: Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y?

Mega Mewtwo X

Between the two forms, Mega Mewtwo X is my personal favorite design-wise. Personal preferences aside, Mega Mewtwo X is a pretty powerful Mega Evolved Pokemon.

With perfect stats, Mega Mewtwo X has a maximum Combat Power (CP) of 6910, which does not include CP-boosting mechanics such as Best Buddy power-up and Super Max Mega Level.

When Mega Evolving into this form, Mewtwo also gains an additional typing, becoming a dual Psychic/Fighting-type Pokemon. This dual Psychic-Fighting typing of Mega Mewtwo X is shared with the Medicham line and Gallade, both of which have Mega Evolutions too.

With its new dual typing, Mega Mewtwo X can be used as either a Psychic or Fighting-type attacker.

As a Fighting-type, Mega Mewtwo X ranks above all other Fighting-types in Pokemon GO, beating Mega Lucario and Mega Blaziken as the best Fighting-type attacker in the game.

The optimal Fighting-type moveset for Mega Mewtwo X would be the Fast move Counter (a Legacy move for Mewtwo that deals 13 damage and generates nine energy) and the Charge move Focus Blast (a nuke option that deals 140 damage).

Using Mega Mewtwo X as a Psychic-type attacker is not too shabby as well. It ranks as the second best Psychic-type in the game, only falling behind its Mega twin.

Should you choose Mega Mewtwo X as a Psychic-type attacker, you have two options in Fast moves: Psycho Cut or Confusion. Although Psycho Cut is better in terms of damage per second, Confusion is much more practical and is actually preferred as it yields double the energy while dealing 19 damage (almost five times more with Psycho Cut’s mere damage of four).

As for its charged move, the Legacy move Psystrike is the best option, dealing 95 damage and only needing 50 energy to charge it up.

For instances where one does not have a Psystrike Mewtwo, the good old reliable Psychic deals the same damage with the same energy requirement, only differing from Psystrike in the GO Battle League as this move would require more energy.

Mega Mewtwo Y

Moving on from X, we’re cracking open this section with Mega Mewtwo Y (a fitting choice, considering it looks suspiciously like a bottle opener).

Unlike Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y is a monotype Pokemon. Meaning it only has the Psychic-type. Despite that, Mega Mewtwo Y is actually the better form, objectively, between the two Mega Mewtwos.

As a pure Psychic-type, Mega Mewtwo Y is the best Psychic-type Pokemon available in the game.

Furthermore, it also has the highest possible CP in Pokemon GO thus far, beating heavy hitters like Mega Rayquaza and Eternatus. Without the need for CP-boosting mechanics (i.e., Best Buddy power-up and Super Max Mega Level), Mega Mewtwo Y maxes at 7267 CP at level 50.

Considering its monotyping, Mega Mewtwo Y is primarily used as a Psychic-type attacker with the moves Confusion and Psystrike.

However, with access to a wide variety of moves, Mega Mewtwo Y can also run Counter, Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt, Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Ice Beam, or Flamethrower. Ultimately, it all comes down to which flavor you want for your Mega Mewtwo Y.

Mega Mewtwo X and Y Adventure Effects

Now that you have gotten to know both forms of Mega Mewtwo, let’s now talk about their unique Adventure Effects.

Although the corresponding Adventure Effects for both forms are still unreleased as of this article’s publishing, datamined information reveals that Mega Mewtwo X will be able to learn Dynamic Punch+, while Mega Mewtwo Y will acquire Future Sight+.

From what we know so far, Dynamic Punch+ would allow Mega Mewtwo X to break two shields in Super Mega Raids. Meanwhile, Future Sight+ reveals Pokemon with high stats in the overworld, similar to the Mighty Pokemon mechanic during Wild Area events in Pokemon GO.

Mega Mewtwo X or Y?

In summary, both forms of Mega Mewtwo bring something different to the table.

Opting for Mega Mewtwo X means you can farm candies for two types, Psychic and Fighting. Additionally, it’s more useful in Super Mega Raids once Dynamic Punch+ is up online in Pokemon GO.

On the other hand, Mega Mewtwo Y has the highest CP out of every Pokemon in the game. Furthermore, Mega Mewtwo Y’s Future Sight+ would be a great tool for hunting very powerful Pokemon whenever you are out and about catching and exploring in the real world.

So, which one should you Mega Evolve?

There’s no wrong answer. Whether you go with Mega Mewtwo X for its versatility or Mega Mewtwo Y for its sheer power, the best choice ultimately comes down to what fits your roster, your raid needs, and your playstyle.

Now go forth, fellow trainers, and choose your Mewtwo wisely!
