Plant outages trigger new yellow alert over Visayas

MANILA, Philippines —The Visayas grid will again be under yellow alert for four hours on Thursday as five large coal plants remain offline.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said the yellow alert status will be up from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This, as the available capacity was logged at 2,478 megawatts (MW) while the peak demand was 2,291 MW.

The Visayas grid, which heavily relies from power imports from Luzon and Mindanao, has been suffering from tight electricity supply for months. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin earlier said that while the Visayas has many renewable energy power plants, it still needs steadier backing from baseload assets.

DOE officials expect the situation to improve with more capacities coming online.

A yellow alert indicates that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. /pai INQ
