A policeman was killed after suspected terrorists opened fire on security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday, NDTV quoted unidentified officials as saying.
The attack took place around 12.30 pm on the Anantnag-Kokernag road, where the policeman was deployed for Amarnath Yatra duty, The Hindu reported.
The policeman, identified as Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi from Budgam, was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Security has been intensified in Anantnag town amid the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, which has remained suspended for the past four days because of inclement weather in Jammu and Kashmir.
Lieutenant General Manoj Sinha condemned the attack and offered his condolences to Qureshi’s family.
“This heinous act will not go unpunished,” Sinha said on social media. “J\&K Police and our security forces are on the ground and will bring those responsible to justice.”
