Telangana Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka today visited the India Energy & Climate Center (IECC) at the University of California, Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy.

The high-level engagement focused on India’s renewable energy commitments, practical pathways to achieve them, the broader energy sector landscape, Telangana’s distinctive progress in the clean energy transition, and opportunities for future collaboration.

The India Energy & Climate Center, housed at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, leverages the university’s world-class expertise in clean energy technology and policy, Silicon Valley innovation ecosystems, and California’s advanced energy experience to support rapid, beneficial transformation of energy systems.

The discussions covered India’s ambitious national targets, including the goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, energy security imperatives and the techno-economic opportunities created by falling clean technology costs. Participants examined implementation pathways spanning policy design, grid modernization, industrial decarbonization, storage integration and equitable transition strategies.

Special attention

The State has advanced a comprehensive Green Power Policy aimed at adding substantial renewable capacity, attracted significant investment in green power projects, expanded solar and other renewables, and pursued innovative models such as women self-help group-led solar initiatives and farmer-centric schemes under programmes like PM-KUSUM. Telangana’s emphasis on reliable 24x7 power, manufacturing of clean energy equipment, and integration of renewables with industrial growth was highlighted as a distinctive State-level model within India’s overall energy transformation.

Officials and researchers also explored pathways for future initiatives, including deeper technical collaboration, capacity building for policymakers, joint analysis of sector-specific challenges (power, industry, transport, and climate resilience), and mechanisms to accelerate deployment of clean technologies while strengthening energy security and economic competitiveness.
