Caesarean deliveries being performed under the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva scheme in empanelled hospitals in Andhra Pradesh will be subjected to audits by the Health Department, Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav has said.

The Minister made the announcement on Thursday during a review meeting on the high number of Caesarean deliveries being performed in the network hospitals.

The development comes amid reports of deaths of women who underwent C-section deliveries in Rajasthan.

Stating that Caesarean deliveries should be carried out only when there is a medical necessity and only after assessing the health condition of the mother and child, the Minister said the hospital should outline the medical reasons, test reports, and other evidence to support their decision of performing C-section deliveries.

According to a release issued by Health Department on Thursday, the Minister directed Director of Secondary Health K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu to ensure that stringent measures are in place.

Mr. Chakradhar Babu issued a circular to all network hospitals to implement these new directives immediately.

“Strict action will be taken against the hospital management for not documenting the medical reasons that necessitated a C-section delivery. Every hospital performing the surgery has to have details of doctors’ observations, test results and treatments provided to the patient,” the Minister said, adding that the prescribed medical protocols should be adhered to strictly.

The network hospitals have been directed to ensure that all doctors and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment are registered in the Healthcare Professionals’ Registry.
