As the parent of a very opinionated four-year-old, I know just how much this age changes everything. They're no longer toddlers content with pushing buttons and stacking blocks – they've developed big personalities, even bigger imaginations and very definite ideas about what they do (and don't) want to play with.

Four-year-olds love role play, building, creating and anything that lets them explore the world around them, all while developing important skills such as problem-solving, fine motor control and confidence.

The best gifts for four-year-olds strike that sweet spot between fun and learning, keeping them entertained long after the initial excitement has worn off. Whether it's a toy that encourages imaginative adventures, gets them moving or quietly sneaks in some educational value, these are the presents that earn their place in the playroom.

I spent weeks putting a wide range of toys, games and activities through their paces with my own child, so keep reading for my pick of the best gifts for four-year-olds – all tested by real-life kids and given their enthusiastic seal of approval.

  • Bestgift for four-year-olds overall
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Lightweight and easy to steer
  • Adjustable handlebars grow with your child
  • Smooth, stable ride
  • Gorgeous premium design

  • Take note- More expensive than some children's scooters

My four-year-old has been obsessed with this Banwood scooter from the moment it came out of the box. There wasn't much setup involved – it was simply a case of attaching the handlebars, which took just a couple of minutes. I was impressed by how stable it feels, even when cornering at speed (which, as any parent knows, is inevitable).

The three-wheel design gave my child plenty of confidence, while the adjustable handlebars mean it should last for several years. I also love that it's made from recycled plastic, so it feels like a slightly more thoughtful purchase than your average scooter.

One of my favourite things is that Banwood has turned it into more than just a scooter. You can also buy matching helmets and cute decorative pins that clip onto the basket. My four-year-old absolutely loved choosing some favourites and making the scooter feel unique.

The scooter has quickly become our go-to for family walks and, as parents, we love that it encourages independence while helping burn off endless four-year-old energy. If you're looking for one standout gift that will genuinely get used week after week, this would be my top recommendation.

  • Bestbudget gift for four-year-olds
  • Age range4+
  • Why we love it- Makes letter recognition fun
  • Great for family game nights
  • Durable game pieces

  • Take note- Shorter play sessions than some board games

Orchard Toys rarely disappoints, and alphabet bingo quickly became one of those games my four-year-old kept asking to play “just one more time”. It’s exactly the kind of educational game I love, because four-year-olds won’t even realise they are learning while playing. Plus, the rules were simple enough to understand.

The game comes with bingo boards featuring colourful pictures, while letter cards are turned over one by one. If your child has a picture beginning with that letter, they place one of the bright star counters over it. The first player to cover every picture wins.

My four-year-old quickly picked up the rules and loved hunting for the correct letters, proudly shouting them out. It sparked lots of conversations about letter sounds too, without ever feeling like a phonics lesson.

As with all Orchard Toys games we've owned, the quality is fantastic, with chunky pieces that stand up well to enthusiastic little hands. It's brilliant value for money and one we've returned to regularly at home.

  • Bestsoft toy for four-year-olds
  • Age rangeFrom birth
  • Why we love it- Quirky, unique design
  • High-quality materials
  • Collectable

  • Take note- More expensive than some other soft toys

My four-year-old has accumulated quite the soft toy collection over the years, so it takes something a little different to earn a permanent spot. Zyllan managed exactly that. Rather than another teddy or bunny, the unusual little alien sparked endless questions and imaginative stories from the minute it arrived.

Like all Jellycat toys, it's incredibly soft, with that luxurious feel for which the brand is known. It quickly became both a cuddle companion at bedtime and a character in countless make-believe adventures during the day.

I also think it's a lovely option if you're buying for a child who already seems to own every dinosaur, unicorn and teddy imaginable. It's a little more unusual, which makes it feel extra special.

Although it's undeniably a premium soft toy, the quality is excellent and I can see it becoming one of those treasured keepsakes that lasts well beyond the preschool years.

  • Bestgift for imaginative play
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Encourages imaginative storytelling
  • Lots of accessories included
  • Compatible with other Sylvanian Families sets

  • Take note- Lots of tiny pieces to keep track of

If your child loves creating little worlds, this is such a lovely gift from Sylvanian Families . My four-year-old spent ages arranging all of the miniature doughnuts, pretending to serve customers and creating elaborate cafe stories. I was genuinely surprised by how much mileage they got out of such a small playset.

The accessories are incredibly detailed, which is part of the appeal, although it does mean you'll occasionally find tiny doughnuts hiding under the sofa. We already had plenty of Sylvanian Families characters, which immediately became customers while my child played with this set, but it's worth noting that you'll probably want to add an extra figure or two if your little one is new to the collection.

I found this toy really encouraged independent play. Rather than asking me to join in constantly, my four-year-old happily made up conversations and scenarios for long stretches, which is always a good sign.

This set is a lovely choice for children with vivid imaginations who enjoy role play and collecting miniature accessories. It isn't the loudest or flashiest toy on this list, but it's one that quietly keeps children entertained time and time again.

  • Bestcommunication toy for four-year-olds
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Easy for young children to use
  • Rechargeable
  • Great for imaginative games

  • Take note- Can take time for children to master

These quickly became part of almost every game my child invented. Whether my four-year-old was an explorer or on a rescue mission, having real walkie talkies instantly made everything feel more exciting – including trips to the bathroom.

The controls are nice and simple but it did take my four-year-old a little while to get used to the fact that they had to press and hold the talk button before speaking. After a few practice runs, they quickly got the hang of it, and it actually turned into a lovely lesson in taking turns, listening carefully and waiting for a reply rather than talking over each other.

As an only child, my four-year-old needed me to join in, which I honestly didn't mind because it made walks around the park and games in the garden much more interactive. I can equally see these being brilliant for siblings, or for taking along on play dates so children can split up for different adventures.

Some parents understandably worry about safety and interference with walkie talkies, but these can be tuned to different channels and we made sure ours were set up before using them. Throughout our testing we didn't experience any interference or hear conversations from anyone else, which was reassuring.

There are a few different designs to choose from (we chose pink dinosaurs, naturally), all of which are incredibly cute, making them feel much more special than generic toy walkie talkies. They're a brilliant way to encourage active, imaginative play away from screens, and I can see us getting plenty more use out of them over the coming years.

  • Bestconstruction gift for four-year-olds
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Brilliant for travel
  • Encourages creativity
  • Easy for little hands

  • Take note- Limited number of pieces (but you can buy more)

This is a toy that really came into its own on days spent out and about. The sturdy metal suitcase keeps everything neatly contained, making it perfect for restaurants, holidays or meet-ups with friends, and I loved not having tiny pieces rolling around the bottom of my bag.

The big Plus-Plus pieces are ideal for younger builders. My four-year-old quickly worked out how the pieces slotted together, and spent ages making rainbows, animals and imaginative creations without needing much help from me.

The suitcase itself is lovely quality and somehow makes the whole set feel a bit more special than a standard plastic tub.

The only reason it hasn't scored full marks is that enthusiastic builders will probably outgrow the 70-piece set fairly quickly. After a few days, my four-year-old started asking for “more pieces” to build bigger models. Thankfully, the Plus-Plus range makes it easy to expand your sets, so this makes a great starting point for a collection.

  • Bestrole play gift for four-year-olds
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Beautiful wooden craftsmanship
  • Inspires imaginative role play
  • Includes lots of accessories

  • Take note- Assembly takes about an hour

  • Premium price

My four-year-old is currently in the phase of wanting to copy absolutely everything I do, so having a miniature laundrette was a dream come true. The assembly took a little while but the instructions were straightforward, and once built it felt incredibly sturdy and well made.

The washing machine, sink, detergent bottles, ironing board and washing accessories immediately inspired imaginative play. One minute we were washing teddy's clothes, the next my four-year-old was opening a laundry business and charging me pretend money to wash socks.

I love toys that encourage real-world role play because they help children build confidence and develop language skills through everyday scenarios. This certainly did that, and it quickly became one of those toys that was revisited day after day rather than forgotten after the first week.

The quality is exceptional, too, making it one of those heirloom-style toys that could easily be passed down to younger siblings.

  • Bestgift for active indoor play
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Beautiful wooden design
  • Can be used in multiple ways
  • Supports balance and coordination

  • Take note- Requires space indoors

At four, my child is constantly climbing, balancing and turning the sofa into an obstacle course, so this Tutti Bambini play arch was an instant hit. It arrived well packaged and took about 20 minutes to assemble, with clear instructions that made the process fairly straightforward.

Almost immediately, it became far more than just a climbing frame. One minute it was a mountain to conquer, the next it was a bridge for toy animals, a secret den and even the roof of an imaginary house. Then, adding the cushion transformed it into a cosy reading nook whenever the climbing was finished.

I particularly liked that it encouraged gross motor development while also inspiring imaginative play. It's the sort of toy that grows with your child because they constantly invent new ways to use it.

However, you will need enough floor space to leave it set up or be prepared to move it around. If you have room, though, it's a wonderful open-ended investment that’s especially suited to energetic children – particularly on rainy days.

  • Bestdressing up gift for four-year-olds
  • Age range3+
  • Why we love it- Beautiful, quality fabrics
  • Comfortable enough for everyday wear
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Machine washable

  • Take note- More expensive than some high street costumes

If your child loves dressing up, this is the sort of costume that feels really special. My four-year-old instantly transformed into a princess when putting on this outfit, which is inspired by Disney’s Elsa. Unlike many dressing-up outfits we've owned, this one actually felt comfortable enough to wear for hours.

One of the biggest selling points for me is the fabric. If your child usually complains that fancy dress costumes are itchy or scratchy, or, like mine, has sensitive skin that's prone to eczema, this is a wonderful alternative. The material is incredibly soft and breathable, so there were no requests to take it off after five minutes, which makes a refreshing change from cheaper costumes.

The quality really stands out. The stitching is beautifully finished and it feels much more like real clothing than a toy costume. That meant it wasn't just reserved for dressing-up time – it came to tea parties, the supermarket, story time and pretty much anywhere my four-year-old decided a princess should go.

While this dress is perfect for fans of Frozen, it's not the only option available. The Fairytale Wardrobe has an extensive collection inspired by Disney movies and magical adventures, including princess dresses, fairy wings and even royal coats and swords. It's a lovely place to shop if you have children with different interests or you're looking for a costume that's a little more unique than the usual high street offerings.

The only downside is that it’s a premium purchase, but one I can genuinely see being worn again and again, and handed down to siblings.

  • BestPokémon gift for four-year-olds
  • Age range4+
  • Why we love it- Great gift for Pokémon fans
  • Belt fits younger children well
  • Encourages imaginative play

  • Take note- Most appealing if your child already knows Pokémon

If your little one has discovered Pokémon, this is guaranteed to be a hit. My four-year-old has recently become fascinated by Pikachu, so the excitement of clipping Poké Balls onto the belt and setting off to “catch” imaginary Pokémon around the house was enormous.

The belt is lightweight and adjusts comfortably, making it easy for younger children to wear while running around. I liked that it immediately encouraged active role play rather than simply displaying the figures on a shelf.

The Poké Balls open to reveal the included characters, and my four-year-old loved swapping them around. It also paired really well with other small figures we already owned, expanding the play possibilities.

If your child isn't interested in Pokémon, there are probably better role-play toys on this list, but for existing fans it's an easy win. Just be warned, it may well be the start of a much bigger Pokémon collection.
