With the launch of the Pixel 11, Google is rolling out a handful of updates to the Journal app that are already appearing on older devices.
Update 8/20: Version 2026.07.27.x has widely rolled out, with Google sharing a changelog for the “Journal August 2026 Updates”:
- Auto format to organize text
- Sleep data from Health Connect
- Daily custom routine reminders
- Interactive live map search
To enable Sleep data, you have to go to Pixel Journal’s App info page > Permissions > Health, fitness and wellness and turn on the “Sleep” toggle.
Original 8/14: On the compose screen, the Inspiration bottom sheet, which has a new icon up top, adds a “Refresh” capability and explicit “Close” button.
There’s also now a new Customization tab to control Media layout. Your options are Compact or Full for an entry.
The big update here is the ability to “Auto format an entry in simple mode” or “expressive mode.” Accessed from a new icon at the top, this feature leverages Private AI Compute in the cloud instead of being exclusively on-device. Other Pixel apps have been moving in this direction.
More power, same protection
Pixel Journal is now powered by Google’s Private AI Compute, allowing you to enjoy AI experiences with industry-leading privacy safeguards. To ensure your data stays private to you, Pixel Journal works in a secure, isolated environment on your device and in the cloud. You can turn off AI features in Journal settings.
The app can now send journaling reminders at set times:
- Morning around 7 AM
- Afternoon around 2 PM
- Evening around 9 PM
Finally, Google has tweaked the dark theme for the Entries tab to improve visibility of the bookmarks icon. The Insights tab also picks up some visual tweaks to the calendar.
We’re seeing version 2026.07.27.x of the Journal app on our Pixel 10a. This update is not yet widely rolled out.
