Canadian men's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team gets off to strong start in Glasgow

Reed De'Aeth leads the way in 16-3 drubbing of Kenya

The Canadian men's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team got off to a hot start at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday, beating Kenya 16-3.

Reed De'Aeth, of Sherwood Park, Alta., led the way for Canada with eight points and 11 rebounds. Regina's Garrett Ostepchuk added four points. The Canadians next face England on Sunday.

The Canadian women's 3x3 team, led by flag bearer Kady Dandeneau, begin their tournament today at 11:10 a.m. ET when they face South Africa.

Earlier on Friday, Canadian swimmers were in the pool for the first heats of the Commonwealth Games.

Ella Jansen, of Burlington, Ont., qualified for the women’s 400-metre freestyle final. The 20-year-old swam to a time of four minutes 10.55 seconds. Madison Kryger, 17, of Niagara Falls, Ont., will also swim in a final, qualifying in the women's 200m backstroke with a time of 2:12.36.

Canadian Para swimmers Katie Cosgriffe and Mary Jibb both qualified for the women’s 200m individual medley SM10. Cosgriffe, 20, of Burlington, Ont., won her heat in a time of 2:33.05, while the 19-year-old Jibb, of Muskoka, Ont., finished in 2:36.20.

The Canadian men's 4x100m freestyle relay team of Josh Liendo, Antoine Sauve, Benjamin Winterborn, and Lorne Wigginton won their heat in 3:17.11 and qualified for the final. Canada's women's team did not start in their qualifying heat.
