After flying into theaters in late June to a disappointing box office performance, Supergirl is finally making its way to home audiences. The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, and marks the second feature film in James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC Universe.

Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira and based on DC characters, the superhero adventure follows Kara as she embarks on a dangerous interstellar journey after an enemy threatens someone she loves.

“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion," the synopsis says. "Together they undertake an epic, interstellar journey, struggling to balance one’s need for vengeance with the pursuit of justice—and to save the life of Kara’s best friend, her dog Krypto. Ultimately, Supergirl will prove that doing good can be tough… and it doesn’t always have to be nice.”

Alcock stars in the title role alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet and Jason Momoa.

Supergirl has grossed more than $124 million worldwide, including $71 million domestically and $53 million internationally. According to Variety, Warner Bros. and DC spent approximately $170 million to produce the film and another $120 million to market it. Based on those figures, the film has fallen significantly short of recouping its reported $290 million production and marketing costs through its theatrical run.

In addition to its digital release, Supergirl will also stream on HBO Max, Warner Bros.' streaming service. While the studio doesn't follow a set schedule, its theatrical releases typically arrive on the platform about 70 to 120 days after opening in theaters.

Recent Warner Bros. releases offer a good indication of what to expect. Superman premiered in theaters on July 11, 2025, before landing on HBO Max 70 days later. Weapons followed with a 77-day theatrical window, while One Battle After Another arrived on the streamer 84 days after its late September debut. Wuthering Heights began streaming 77 days after opening in theaters.

If Supergirl follows a similar release pattern, it will likely begin streaming on HBO Max sometime between early September and late October 2026. Warner Bros. has not yet announced an official streaming date, so stay tuned for updates.

What Are the Supergirl Reviews?

Supergirl received mixed reviews from critics, though audiences were more receptive. As of July 28, the film holds a 53% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while moviegoers have given it a 73% Popcornmeter score.

TheWrap critic Amelia Emberwing wrote that "Ultimately, Supergirl is a competent continuation of the DCU, even if it isn’t as well made as Superman before it,” adding that “a lot of the frustration stems from potential that it just can’t seem to reach.”

San Francisco Chronicle contributor Zaki Hasan praised Alcock's performance, writing that the actress’ “Supergirl has to grow into the hero she’s destined to become, and by the time the credits roll, it’s her performance — not the increasingly oversized spectacle surrounding it — that leaves the strongest impression.”
