Japanese shopping mall explodes after earthquake hits country

Car dashcam footage shows the moment a shopping mall in south Japan exploded, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake ripped through the region.

Many people have been trapped inside the Aeon shopping mall in Kashima Town following the quake on Tuesday (28 July).

Footage from a passing car shows the second floor of the mall, which houses approximately 200 stores, collapsing in on itself.

Broadcaster TBS has reported that “quite a few” were presumed dead.

Aeon said that customers were being evacuated and assessing the situation. The cause of the explosion is unclear, it added.

Around 200 people had escaped to the mall's car park, according to the national broadcaster NHK.
