WASHINGTON, July 29. /TASS/. The US Senate on Tuesday took an initial procedural vote on a bill that would toughen sanctions on Russia.

There were more than 60 co-sponsors of the legislation in the Senate as the vote continued on Tuesday night, enough to allow the chamber to vote on final passage.

The Republicans who have the majority in the Senate expect to hold a final vote on the measure possibly by the end of this week, Punchbowl News, a media outlet covering legislative activity at Congress, reported earlier.

The bill envisages restrictions on Russia’s political and military leaders, and state-owned companies as well as secondary sanctions against Russia’s trade partners. Senators also proposed a 100% tariff on major buyers of Russian oil and gas.

On July 4, US President Donald Trump described the chances of passing the Russia sanctions bill as strong as he said part of key provisions in it had not been discussed with him.
