As restaurant owners and associations in Bengaluru have threatened to discontinue their partnership with food delivery platforms from August 15, delivery personnel with Zomato and Swiggy have announced that they will go on strike on the same day in solidarity with the hotels and restaurants.

Restaurants have accused platforms of arbitrary deductions, payment settlements, and unrelated advertising charges.

The leadership of the Karnataka App-based Workers Union said that the demands raised by the Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels Association (BBHA) and others are akin to demands raised by delivery workers over the last few years.

“Food delivery apps must be transparent and upfront about their payout and deduction systems and must end predatory commissions of up to 30%,” said a statement from the union.

Delivery workers have also echoed the hotel associations’ demand for dedicated human representatives from food delivery companies to manage partner relationships and provide support when issues arise.

“Food delivery companies like Swiggy and Zomato are earning crores by exploiting everyone else in the ecosystem — hotels and restaurants, delivery workers, and even customers,” said Inayat Ali, president of the Karnataka App-based Workers Union, while calling for a strike of workers on August 15.

Earlier, gig workers across the country had gone on strike on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve in 2025.
