A 91-year-old Florida man is facing a premeditated first-degree murder charge after authorities say he fatally shot his 87-year-old wife inside their home over the weekend.
Sheriff’s officials announced Monday that William Lippold was taken into custody and charged with premeditated first-degree murder with a firearm.
Deputies with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Como Court in the St. Augustine Shores community on Saturday following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers located the woman dead inside the residence. The ame of the victim has not been released.
Residents in the St. Augustine Shores area expressed shock following the incident. Neighbors who spoke with News4JAX stated that the victim was blind and may have been living with Alzheimer’s disease.
“Well, she was blind, and frail. And then he started getting even frailer. But they were a really nice couple, and everybody’s heart broke,” neighbor Bill Meyers said. “Everybody in the neighborhood’s heart broke because we all loved the guy and we’d do anything for him.”
Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
Detectives with the agency’s Major Crimes Unit spent hours over the weekend processing the scene, surrounding the home with crime scene tape as emergency vehicles lined the typically quiet residential street.Authorities said that there was no ongoing threat to the surrounding community, though the investigation remained active.
Witnesses described an intensive law enforcement response prior to Lippold’s arrest.
Neighborhood resident James Frazee told News4JAX that officers deployed a drone outside the residence to communicate with the suspect.
“The police landed a drone right in front of the front door,” Frazee said. “It had, like, a speaker on it. And they were talking to him and telling him to come out with his hands up.
“Well, then he did, I guess agree to come out because a bunch of guys swarmed up there with assault rifles around the house, and he came out and they pulled the car up real quick, and they put him in the back.”
