The surplus water released from the Kabini reservoir in Karnataka reached Mettur Dam in Salem district on Tuesday.

As a result a heavy downpour in Karnataka, the Kabini reservoir is nearly full. Owing to this, water was released from the dam on Saturday, which reached the Stanley reservoir in Mettur after three days.

Water Resources Department officials said that the inflow reached the reservoir in the afternoon, and steadily increased. The amount of water discharged from the Kabini reservoir is being maintained at 25,000 cusecs. So, in a couple of days, the inflow to the reservoir will touch 25,000 cusecs. At present, inflow at Hogenakkal touched 18,000 cusecs. If the dam receives 25,000 cusecs for a whole day, the water level will increase by four feet, officials added.

At 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the water level at the reservoir stood at 73.18 feet against the full reservoir level of 120 feet. The storage stood at 35.49 TMC, of its to the full capacity of 93.47 TMC. Inflow into the dam increased to 4,923 cusecs from 68 cusecs. The amount of water discharged from the dam into the Cauvery for drinking water purposes was maintained at 1,500 cusecs.
