Looking back on the past few years of foldables, one of the biggest things I’ve felt Samsung’s entrants have been missing has been an anti-reflective display on the inside. Finally, that’s arriving with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, and the results are excellent.

Anti-reflective displays are not some brand new concept. Matte screen protectors have been around for ages, and Samsung started using an anti-reflective glass from Corning in recent generations of its Galaxy S Ultra lineup. But I kept on circling back to 2023’s OnePlus Open, which was the first foldable I’d tried with an anti-reflective layer on a foldable display. Put simply, it was a game changer, as overly-reflective foldable displays had been a huge problem for years, especially on Samsung devices.

Finally, that’s changing.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 UItra both adopt an anti-reflective layer in their display assembly. Specifically, it resides within the topmost film, and the results are pretty impressive. Like the Galaxy S Ultra devices, reflections don’t disappear, but their intensity is drastically reduced.

Samsung had a demo at its Unpacked event showcasing indoor-like and outdoor-like conditions, and the results speak for themselves with Galaxy Z Fold 7 on the left side and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra on the right side.

Combined with the new 3,000 nits of peak brightness, this should mark a huge upgrade in outdoor usability and, unlike the Galaxy S Ultra lineup, it won’t be ruined by an extra screen protector since foldable users are typically sticking with the built-in one.
