Opening day for Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is so close we can smell the blood in the air. Its writer-director, Jane Schoenbrun, is understandably excited for the world to experience their love letter to slashers starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. But once the movie’s out, fans will inevitably want to know what Schoenbrun is working on next. One project we already know about just got a tiny update: their television adaptation of Charlie Burns’ Black Hole for Netflix.

Black Hole is set in a world where a sexually transmitted infection turns people into mutated monsters, which would be bad enough, but then a serial killer starts stalking them too. The main character is a senior in high school, so it skews more toward Schoenbrun’s first two features, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow. However, it’s their first series, so it presents a unique challenge on several levels.

A new Vulture interview with Schoenbrun confirms “they are going to write the whole season themselves and have finished two episodes already.” The piece also notes that while it’s seemingly going smoothly so far, “it is new territory and a new way of working” for the filmmaker.

âMy biggest fear is that I end up making something that Iâm not proud of,â Schoenbrun told Vulture.

The profile name-checks a few projects that didn’t work out as intended, including a series that almost made the cut at HBO called Public Access Afterworld. No matter; Schoenbrun turned it into a novel instead.

There are also the never-rans. As Vulture writes, “After Weâre All Going to the Worldâs Fair became a modestly buzzy success upon its 2022 release by Utopia, Schoenbrun was sent all sorts of unproduced scripts they had no interest in directing, including one for a reboot of Leprechaun.”

That pitch ended up doing a bit of good beyond being just a wild bit of trivia, however: “The fact someone thought they could leverage a trans filmmaker to make a revival of that franchise acceptable was one of the inspirations behind [Einbinder’s character] Krisâs encounter with zombie IP in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.”

Speaking of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, it hits theaters August 7. Black Hole does not yet have a release date on Netflix.
