Two people have died following a fire that destroyed a house south of Brisbane on Tuesday, with police declaring a crime scene.

Emergency services were called to the home on Adelaide Street in Kingston about 3pm, with reports of a two-storey Queenslander engulfed in flames.

An exclusion zone was declared while several fire crews brought the blaze under control.

Police confirmed two people – a woman and a man – were found dead inside the property.

Four other occupants, including the woman’s husband, managed to escape unharmed as the fire spread rapidly through the house.

Nine News identified the woman as 63-year-old mother Leanne Laver. The man was said to be a close family friend.

Neighbours described hearing screams and yells of panic as flames took hold of the home within minutes.

The house was destroyed and five vehicles on the property were also burnt out.

The family told reporters they did everything they could to save the 63-year-old woman, who had reportedly lived at the home for more than 35 years.

A crime scene has been declared as police work to determine the cause of the blaze.
