Apple's 20th anniversary iPhone is still about a year away, but leaks are already hinting at what could be the biggest design upgrade the company has made in years. A new report claims Apple is testing its largest iPhone display ever, with a screen measuring around 6.96 inches that could be marketed as a 7-inch display if it reaches consumers.

The information comes from well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, who says Apple is internally testing the larger panel. According to the leak, the prototype keeps the same screen ratio as the current iPhone 17 Pro Max, but it is still unclear whether the display will eventually make its way to the final iPhone 20 Pro Max.

A bigger display with an almost borderless design

The larger display is only one part of Apple's reported plans for its anniversary iPhone. Previous reports have suggested that the company is working on a major redesign that could bring it closer to its long-term vision of an iPhone that looks like a single piece of glass.

Multiple rumours claim the anniversary model could feature an edge-to-edge display with glass curved on all four sides, creating an almost borderless look. Bloomberg had earlier reported that Apple had already stepped up development of two versions of its anniversary iPhone, adding more weight to speculation that a major redesign is on the way.

Digital Chat Station said, "An exclusive and forward-looking information shows that Apple is proofing a super-large screen with a physical size of 6.96 inches and a standard size of 7 inches."

While the increase may sound dramatic because of the "7-inch" branding, the actual jump is expected to be relatively small. The current iPhone 17 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch display, so the difference would likely be noticeable but not massive.

Apple last increased the size of its premium iPhone displays with the iPhone 16 Pro lineup in 2024. The Pro model moved from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, while the Pro Max grew from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches, helped by slimmer bezels and slightly larger body dimensions. If the latest leak turns out to be accurate, the 2027 model would become Apple's biggest iPhone yet.

Will it really be called iPhone 20?

The final branding of Apple's anniversary iPhone remains a mystery. Some reports have suggested Apple could launch a special edition device similar to the iPhone X, while others believe the redesigned phone will simply debut as the next Pro models. Another theory is that Apple could skip directly from the iPhone 18 series to the iPhone 20 as a tribute to the iPhone's 20th anniversary.

For now, there is no confirmation that the larger display will appear in the final product. Apple is said to be testing different prototypes, and hardware plans often change before a device enters production.

Before the anniversary iPhone arrives, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone in less than two months. The company is widely expected to unveil its next-generation iPhones in the first half of September 2026. Leaks suggest the Pro models will bring improvements in design, cameras, display technology and performance, though they are also expected to carry higher price tags. Until Apple makes anything official, all of these details should be treated as rumours.
