Marvel Studios has released the first proper Avengers: Doomsday trailer as tickets go on sale.

The trailer reveals a new look at a number of returning characters from previous Avengers movies, such as Thor and Steve Rogers. But we also get a look at Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, albiet with his mask on, and hear his Latverian accent.

We begin at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, with narration from Doctor Doom. "Something's coming," he says, "something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision." We see Professor X, played once again by Patrick Stewart, blinded by the light of what looks like an incursion - the collision of two universes. We also get a glimpse at Doctor Doom during this sequence, plotting some sort of dramatic course of action.

We then move to Avengers Tower and Thor's speech about the impending doom. "I've fought with many warriors in my time," Thor says. "They were far stronger than all of us put together, and they died. They died facing enemies and threats that scared me far less than this one. Everything that they sacrified will be for nothing if we do not stand together. Put aside your petty squabbles and presume nothing except this: if you return, you will return as brothers and sisters. But mark my words, we're going to need a miracle."

We see Thor, all four members of The Fantastic Four, a surprised looking Ant-Man, who is stood next to Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier and Sam Wilson / Captain America, and The Thunderbolts / New Avengers in what I assume is their first meeting. We see Namor and Letitia Wright's character Shuri, who is the current Black Panther, apparently about to have some sort of fight in Namor's throne room, flanked by The Fantastic Four and The Thunderbolts. This looks to me like the heroes going to Namor to ask for help in the fight with Doom.

We then see a battle at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, with Cyclops at the ready, and a fight between Channing Tatum's Gambit and Simu Liu's Shang-Chi. Loki is seen looking concerned. Mystique fights Yelena Belova. There are a lot of very worried heroes who appear to be saying their goodbyes to loved one. Professor X looks like he knows this is the end for him and Maegneto. Ant-Man kisses his daughter, Cassie Lang, on the forehead. Human Torch hugs his sister, Susan Storm, as what looks like an incursion threatens to destroy them.

We then see Susan Storm say goodbye to Shuri as a towering wave approaches. This looks like the work of Namor, who I think is heading towards the escaping Shuri, leaving Susan Storm to hold the wave and Namor himself off. Could they have stolen something from Namor that was needed in the fight against Doom?

Thor leaps into the air and tries to hit Doctor Doom with Stormbreaker, but, in a display of devastating power, Doom stops Stormbreaker simply by holding out two fingers. Thor, it seems, is powerless in this fight, and Doom is distinctly overpowered. As Thor says, our heroes need a miracle. Up steps Steve Rogers, once again played by Chris Evans. Thor is in disbelief. "It's not possible." To prove it really is him, Rogers calls for Mjolnir, which flies into his hand.

The trailer leaves us with plenty of questions. Doctor Doom's short speech at the beginning of the clip teases his role. Is he the villain or the secret hero of Doomsday? That's a question we've asked ourselves. Elsewhere, we're not quite sure how Doomsday will explain how a young Steve Rogers returns to save the day, although there are many theories. Are we seeing the death of the Fox X-Men here during the trailer, potentially setting up Marvel's planned X-Men reboot with younger actors playing the main characters? And how is it that Doctor Doom is Tony Stark / Iron Man, or at least has the same face?

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026. Here's the official synopsis:

"Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday," the movie's description reads, as seen on Rotten Tomatoes. "Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
