Brazilian airline Azul is pressing ahead with its Azul A321 freighter expansion, with two more converted Airbus A321P2F cargo planes scheduled for delivery in October and December 2026. The additions will bring the dedicated freighter fleet at Azul Cargo Express to four aircraft, a key step in the carrier’s plan to triple cargo capacity by 2027 as it rebuilds operations after a major debt restructuring.

A Phased Freighter Rollout
Azul Cargo Express, the logistics arm of Brazil’s largest airline by destinations, received its first two Airbus A321P2F freighters in late 2024. The aircraft, bearing serial numbers 2741 and 2759, were leased from Ireland-based AerCap and entered commercial service on February 15, 2025. They replaced the airline’s aging Boeing 737-400F models, which could carry only about 14 tons of cargo.
The two additional freighters now planned for late 2026 will double the dedicated fleet to four aircraft. Azul has indicated that two more A321P2Fs will follow in 2027, though those remain further out on the delivery horizon. All four aircraft currently confirmed are part of a strategy to modernize the cargo division and align it with the airline’s all-Airbus passenger fleet.
Why the A321P2F Matters for Capacity
Each converted A321 freighter can carry up to 28 tons of cargo, with a volumetric capacity of 212 cubic meters. That represents a 39% increase in weight capacity and a 50% jump in volumetric space compared to the retired 737-400Fs. Azul also reports that fuel consumption per ton drops by roughly 27%, saving up to 9,000 tons of CO₂ annually per aircraft.
The aircraft’s longer range opens the door to international long-haul cargo routes, a segment Azul has been eager to develop. Currently, the freighters operate on three domestic trunk routes: Campinas (Viracopos airport) to Manaus, Campinas to Recife, and Recife to Manaus. These corridors connect Brazil‘s industrial southeast with the Amazon region and the northeast, two areas where air cargo is critical for supplying distant cities.

Post-Bankruptcy Recovery and Cargo Strategy
The freighter expansion is unfolding against the backdrop of Azul’s recent financial turbulence. The airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in June 2024 and emerged in early 2025 after restructuring approximately US$1.5 billion (R$7.65 billion) in debt. During the process, Azul delisted its shares from the New York Stock Exchange and has not yet announced plans for a new listing.
Cargo has become a central pillar of the airline’s recovery plan. High-margin freight operations offer a steadier revenue stream than the volatile passenger market, and Azul’s extensive domestic network – reaching more than 5,100 Brazilian cities, or 96% of the national territory – gives it a distribution advantage. The company also holds certifications to serve 47 countries, though international cargo routes have not yet been launched with the A321P2F fleet.
Operational integration has been relatively smooth. Pilots and maintenance crews already certified for Azul’s passenger A320neo and A321neo aircraft can work on the P2F converted freighters without additional type-rating training, keeping costs down as the cargo division scales up.
What International Observers Should Watch
For foreign investors and businesses tracking Latin American logistics, Azul‘s freighter program offers a window into Brazil’s evolving cargo market. The A321P2F is becoming a popular choice globally for express freight on medium-haul routes, and Azul’s adoption signals that Brazilian e-commerce and industrial supply chains are demanding faster, more reliable air freight.
The October and December 2026 delivery slots will be closely watched as indicators of whether Azul can stay on schedule with its post-bankruptcy operational targets. Any delays could affect the company’s ability to capture peak-season cargo volumes, particularly during the end-of-year holiday rush when Brazilian retailers and manufacturers rely heavily on air freight to move goods across the country’s vast geography.
