MANILA, Philippines — The eighth day of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is set for today, July 21.

This will be the last day of the hearing on Article IV of the Articles of Impeachment, which tackles the charges of grave threats and inciting to sedition against Duterte.

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag is expected to testify before the impeachment court at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

He will be the last witness under Article IV.

On July 20, House Prosecution Team legal spokesperson Benjamin Tolosa said that Matibag will provide “new important information.”

“You wouldn’t want to miss his testimony for tomorrow,” Tolosa said in a July 20 press briefing.

Article IV was originally set to be tackled for 11 days.

However, it was trimmed to eight days after the prosecution team dispensed with Vice President Duterte's chief of staff Zuleika Lopez and House Security Officer Capt. Belinda Bello as witnesses.

Matibag will be the third witness to testify before the impeachment court.

The first two were NBI Agent John Mark Calilung and NBI Regional Director Jeremy Lotoc.

The charges stem from Duterte's pronouncements in October and November 2024.

In a November 2024 Zoom press conference, Duterte said that she had hired an assassin to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
